WILMOT RACEWAY
WILMOT, WI
5-23-09
Calling Wilmot Raceway, “my home track”, is a bit of an understatement. Wilmot is only
6 minutes from my house. This is the track where I raced a car for the first time. It is
also where I got my first heat and feature race victories in a car. My family has been
competing and spectating at Wilmot Raceway for at least 30 years. It might not be the
best dirt track I race on, but it is “home”.

Heat race:
We don’t qualify at Wilmot, so we draw numbers to set the starting positions for the
heat races. I have to say, for all the luck I have had on the track over the years, I have no
luck when it comes to drawing a starting position.
As we drove around the track on our pace lap I sized up the competition. I felt like if I
could anticipate the wave of the green flag to start the race I could get a good jump at
the start. I did exactly what I needed to do and got a great start.
It did not take long for me to get the front of the pack. I steadily pulled away from the
field and cruised to my first win of the 2009 season.

Feature race:
As I have mentioned before, our rules state that we invert the finishing order of the heat
race to determine the starting lineup for the feature. Of course, this meant I would have
to start the feature race deep in the field.
The track was very dry and slick. I hate to say it, but I knew right away it was going to
be a tough race for me. The setup on my car  was way off and it took all I had in me just
to keep it on the track.
It was the hardest I ever had to fight in a race just to finish. I was able to make some
passes and finished the race in 6th place.
Not that I am happy with a 6th place finish, but it could have been a lot worst since my
car was handling so poorly.
